Here’s a test:
I’m holding a baby in one hand and a petri dish holding a fetus in the other.
I’m going to drop one. You chose which.
If you really truly believe a fetus is the same thing as a baby, it should be impossible for you to decide. You should have to flip a coin, that’s how impossible the decision should be.
Shot in the dark, you saved the baby.
Because you’re aware there’s a difference.
Now admit it
Assuming that this relates to abortion, this is what I have to say.
No one ever says that a fetus is the same thing as a born baby.
But anyone who says that a fetus is not a tiny, living human being is an absolute moron.
The vast majority of people do not even realized they are pregnant until they are 8 weeks along. Most people may not understand why they wouldn’t know right away, but the main reason is that women’s periods are never on the dot, especially when their surroundings change such as living/being around other women. Sometimes they occur a few weeks late, or they may have missed one altogether. This is very common.
Anyhow, by this time, the baby has:
- a formed heart that is beating, has developed chambers and has blood flowing
- a brain that is working and producing brain waves
- developed facial features
- formed bones that have replaced the previous cartilage
- all organs intact
- the ability to hear
- fingerprints that are starting to form
I don’t need to tell you that at this point the baby is very recognizably human.
Yet this is only 8 weeks. Most abortions are limited to being under 22 weeks (except for medical emergencies), though most are done under 12 weeks. Up to week 12, however, the baby also:
- develops teeth and fingernails
- begins to grow head and body hair
- holds things and makes facial expressions such as frowning
- “breathes” amniotic fluid and urinates
- begins to suck its thumb and feel pain
After 22 weeks (approximately 5 months) is where the baby begins to have a chance of surviving if born early. I won’t go into the details of weeks 12-22, except that babies over 18 weeks go through partial-birth abortion, where they are partially delivered, then killed by being stabbed in the head, typically with a pair of scissors, and having their brains sucked out. After 20 weeks they typically have to dismember the baby inside the mother’s womb to be able to remove it.
Also, a fetus is characterized by the fact that it had developed to the point of being recognizable as belonging to its own species, and by the presence of all the major body organs. So… calling it a fetus is acknowledging that it’s human.
